Ottawa, August 22, 2026: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has suspended trade negotiations with the Trump administration after last-ditch talks failed to produce an agreement before a U.S. tariff deadline.
Carney said Canada had made important progress during negotiations but that the latest developments were not enough to meet Ottawa’s objectives. He ordered Canadian negotiators to return to Ottawa, bringing the latest round of discussions to an abrupt halt.
The breakdown came as the United States moved ahead with 50% tariffs on about $20 billion worth of Canadian products, affecting roughly 5% of Canada’s exports to the U.S. The duties cover a range of goods, including hockey equipment and other manufactured products.
Carney has vowed that Canada will respond with “dollar-for-dollar” retaliatory tariffs, while the government prepares additional measures to support affected Canadian businesses and workers.
The suspension represents a sharp reversal from earlier this week, when both governments indicated that substantial progress had been made. On August 18, Washington had agreed to postpone the new tariffs for three days while negotiations continued.
The dispute could now further strain economic relations between the two North American allies and complicate efforts to renegotiate the broader U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade framework (USMCA). Analysts warn that prolonged tariff tensions could increase costs for businesses and disrupt highly integrated North American supply chains.
For Canada, the latest confrontation also reinforces Carney’s push to diversify the country’s trading relationships and build greater economic resilience outside its traditional dependence on the U.S. market.
