Moscow / Kyiv – The war between Russia and Ukraine escalated sharply this weekend with massive mutual strikes on both capitals.
Russia reported at least seven people killed in one of Ukraine’s largest mass drone attacks of 2026, with over 200 drones downed in the Moscow region, while Russian missile and drone barrages hit Kyiv and its surrounding region.
7 Killed in Moscow Region
A Ukrainian drone attack on a logistics centre in western Russia killed seven people and wounded 24, regional governors said Saturday, as the Moscow region was again targeted by a wave of drones.
“Seven night-shift employees were killed when enemy UAVs hit a Wildberries logistics centre,” Governor Evgeny Pervyshov said. The attack took place in the town of Kotovsk in Tambov region, while another Wildberries complex in Elektrostal, Moscow region, also came under attack.
Russian firm Wildberries, Russia’s largest online retailer, said its logistics complexes in Kotovsk and Elektrostal came under attack and a fire broke out.
The scale was enormous. More than 370 drones were launched toward the Moscow region overnight, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said. In a separate wave on Monday, officials said Ukraine targeted Moscow with 400 drones overnight, wounding two people and setting buildings ablaze.
The Russian Defence Ministry said air defence systems had shot down 381 Ukrainian drones over Russian regions and the Black and Azov seas overnight. Most were neutralised at long range, including 64-85 destroyed on approach to the capital.
Ukraine has been striking a range of targets in Russia, which Kyiv says is fair retribution for Moscow’s more than four-year barrages against its territory.
Russian Strikes Hit Kyiv
Concurrently, Russian strikes hammered the Ukrainian capital.
In recent weeks, Russian missile and drone strikes on Kyiv and the surrounding region have repeatedly caused heavy casualties. On August 5, strikes killed 15-17 people and wounded over 40, hitting a warehouse, brewery and mail sorting office. On July 6, on the eve of a NATO summit, strikes killed at least 11 people in the Kyiv region.
Early Monday attacks have killed up to 28 people in Kyiv and Bucha, exposing Ukraine’s critical shortage of U.S.-made air-defence interceptors, according to officials.
The overnight strikes involved prolonged waves of drones followed by missile attacks, a tactic Ukrainian officials say is intended to exhaust air defences.
The back-to-back mass attacks come as U.S.-led diplomatic efforts to end the fighting have stalled, with both sides trading some of the largest drone barrages seen in the 4-year war.
