Islamabad, August 19, 2026: Pakistan’s Supreme Court has ordered authorities to transfer jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan from Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad, following growing concerns over his health.
The 73-year-old Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder has been in prison since August 2023. A recent medical assessment reportedly noted fluctuating blood pressure and other health concerns, while his family and party have repeatedly demanded access to specialist medical care.
Under the Supreme Court’s order, Khan is to be examined and treated under a medical board that will include his personal physician and sister, Dr Uzma Khan. The court also directed authorities to allow family visits and communication with his sons, who live abroad.
However, the development has triggered a fresh legal dispute. On Wednesday, the Pakistan government filed a review petition challenging the order to move Khan to a private hospital, arguing that prisoners should generally receive treatment in government facilities.
The dispute over Khan’s medical treatment comes amid continued political tensions surrounding his imprisonment. His PTI supporters have welcomed the Supreme Court intervention and have continued to call for improved medical care and greater access to his family and lawyers.
The Supreme Court’s order and the government’s subsequent challenge could further intensify the political confrontation between Khan’s supporters and the authorities.
