Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded his two-day state visit to Uzbekistan on August 30, 2026, holding high-level talks with Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev in Tashkent. The visit focused on expanding cooperation in trade, defence, energy, connectivity, digital technology and other strategic sectors.
A major outcome of the visit was the decision to elevate India-Uzbekistan relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The two countries also set an ambitious target of increasing bilateral trade to US$5 billion by 2030.
Key Agreements and Areas of Cooperation
India and Uzbekistan agreed to strengthen cooperation in:
- Energy and long-term uranium supplies
- Defence and defence production
- Trade and investment
- Digital connectivity
- Critical minerals and clean energy
- Education and healthcare
- Regional connectivity and economic cooperation
The two sides also agreed to establish a ministerial-level coordination mechanism to improve implementation of bilateral initiatives.
Modi Receives Uzbekistan’s Highest State Honour
In a significant gesture highlighting the close relationship between the two countries, President Mirziyoyev conferred Uzbekistan’s highest state honour, the Order of Oliy Darajali Dustlik, on Prime Minister Modi. The award recognises his contribution to strengthening India-Uzbekistan relations.
Modi’s visit comes as India seeks to deepen its engagement with Central Asia, particularly in trade, connectivity, energy security and regional stability. After Uzbekistan, the Prime Minister is scheduled to travel to Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, for the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit on August 31–September 1.
