Helsinki, August 22, 2026: Finland has summoned Russia’s ambassador and demanded an explanation after a Russian reconnaissance aircraft was suspected of entering Finnish airspace over the western Gulf of Finland, escalating tensions along NATO’s northern flank.
The Finnish Border Guard identified the aircraft as a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance plane. Authorities said the aircraft entered Finnish airspace on Thursday afternoon and remained inside for approximately three minutes, reaching about 9 kilometers into Finnish territory at its deepest point. A preliminary investigation is now underway.
Finnish Defence Minister Antti Häkkänen said every suspected violation of the country’s airspace is taken seriously. The incident occurred south of the island of Utö, in an area where international and Finnish airspace are relatively close.
Finland’s Foreign Ministry said Russia’s ambassador was summoned on Friday and asked to provide an explanation for the suspected violation. Moscow’s response to the latest diplomatic move was not immediately clear.
The incident comes amid heightened security concerns across NATO’s eastern and northern borders. Finland, which shares a 1,340-kilometer border with Russia, joined NATO in April 2023 following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Finnish authorities have also reported suspected Russian military aircraft entering the country’s airspace earlier this year.
The latest incident is likely to receive close attention from Finland and its NATO allies as Helsinki continues strengthening surveillance and air-defence capabilities along its border with Russia.
