Moscow, October 2, 2026: Russian President Vladimir Putin has praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s continued efforts to help bring an end to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, saying the Indian leader has “very good ideas” for finding a mutually acceptable solution.

Speaking at the Valdai International Discussion Club, Putin said Modi regularly raises the issue of ending the conflict despite the close and friendly relationship between India and Russia.

“Despite our very good and even friendly relations… [he] constantly raises the question… about putting an end to the conflict in Ukraine,” Putin said.

Putin said Modi has a strong interest in ending the conflict and has suggested ideas aimed at finding solutions acceptable to both sides. He described India’s position as neutral while emphasizing New Delhi’s interest in bringing the war to an end.

“We are thankful for his desire to put an end to this conflict through peaceful means and as soon as possible,” Putin said.

Modi’s Consistent Call for Dialogue

Prime Minister Modi has repeatedly called for dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict. India has maintained that peaceful negotiations are necessary to end the hostilities.

The latest comments from Putin come shortly after the two leaders met in New Delhi during the BRICS Summit in September. Their discussions included bilateral economic and strategic cooperation as well as the Ukraine conflict.

Putin’s remarks highlight India’s continuing diplomatic engagement with both sides of the conflict, while Moscow publicly acknowledges Modi’s repeated calls for a peaceful settlement.

The Russia-Ukraine war began in February 2022 and remains one of the most consequential ongoing conflicts in international politics.
