An Indian airline captain has been hailed for his courage after a terrifying cockpit incident aboard flydubai Flight FZ1073, which was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv on Wednesday.

Captain Smit Machchhar, identified in Indian media reports as the pilot in command, was reportedly attacked and stabbed by his Omani co-pilot during the flight. The incident triggered an emergency response and forced the Boeing 737 to divert to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.

Dramatic cockpit confrontation

According to Reuters and Israeli officials, the co-pilot allegedly attacked the captain and then attempted to interfere with the aircraft’s controls. The aircraft subsequently experienced a dramatic loss of altitude before emergency procedures were activated.

Flight-tracking information reported by several outlets indicated that the aircraft transmitted emergency signals, including 7700, followed by 7500, the international transponder code associated with unlawful interference or a possible hijacking.

Passengers and other crew members reportedly intervened and helped subdue the attacker. Other pilots who were travelling as passengers also assisted in getting the aircraft safely under control.

Emergency landing in Saudi Arabia

The aircraft diverted from its planned route and eventually landed safely at Tabuk Airport in northwestern Saudi Arabia.

Reports said both pilots were taken to hospital following the incident. The co-pilot was subsequently detained by Saudi authorities while investigations continued.

The aircraft was carrying roughly 180 passengers and crew, according to reports, although passenger figures have varied between sources.

Indian pilot’s role draws international attention

The identification of Captain Smit Machchhar has brought particular attention in India. Reports say Machchhar previously worked with SpiceJet before joining flydubai and had extensive Boeing 737 experience.

His actions during the emergency, together with the intervention of passengers, cabin crew and other pilots, have been widely praised as contributing to the safe outcome of an extremely dangerous situation.

However, investigators are still establishing the precise sequence of events inside the cockpit and the motive behind the confrontation. Flydubai has urged caution against premature conclusions while authorities investigate.

A flight that narrowly avoided disaster

What began as a routine Dubai–Tel Aviv service rapidly turned into a major aviation emergency. The aircraft’s sudden descent, emergency transponder signals and cockpit confrontation prompted authorities to treat the situation as a serious security incident.

The aircraft ultimately reached the ground safely, with the passengers surviving the ordeal.

Captain Smit Machchhar’s name is now emerging internationally alongside those of the passengers, cabin crew and fellow pilots who helped prevent the incident from becoming an aviation catastrophe.
