In a dramatic political shift in the Balkans, Serbia’s long-time populist President Aleksandar Vucic announced his resignation on Sunday, September 27, ending his second and final five-year term ahead of schedule.
Vucic stepped down seven months before his term was due to end, paving the way for early presidential elections alongside snap parliamentary polls scheduled for October 25.
The move is seen as a strategic comeback. Constitutionally barred from seeking a third term as President, Vucic will now run as the Prime Ministerial candidate for his ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS).
His resignation comes after nearly two years of intense student-led protests that have mounted the biggest challenge to his decade-long rule, demanding early elections. Vucic submitted his resignation from the Presidency in Belgrade as supporters gathered outside chanting his name.
Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabic will serve as acting President until a new head of state is elected.
