WASHINGTON — In a major boost to US manufacturing, President Donald Trump unveiled plans for a mega $15 billion integrated steel complex in Iowa, developed by Mesabi Metallics—a US entity owned by India’s multinational conglomerate Essar Group. Speaking alongside Essar leadership in the Oval Office, Trump hailed the facility as “the largest steel plant in American history”.
The announcement forms part of Essar Group’s broader $18 billion investment commitment across the United States.
Key Highlights of the Project
Scale & Capacity: The facility is slated to produce 10 million tonnes of steel annually, making it one of the largest single-site steel operations globally.
Job Creation: According to White House officials, the project is expected to generate approximately 1,750 permanent operational jobs in Iowa.
Timeline: Production is targeted to begin by 2030.
Integrated Supply Chain: The Iowa steel plant will be fully integrated with a $2.5 billion iron ore mining facility in Minnesota’s Mesabi Iron Range. The Minnesota mine—marking the first new iron mine in the US in 50 years—will supply 7.5 million tonnes of iron annually and create roughly 350 direct jobs.
