Nvidia is reportedly in talks to invest as much as $3 billion in SB Energy, a subsidiary of SoftBank Group, as part of a broader financing effort linked to a massive data center project being developed for OpenAI in Ohio.
According to a report by The Information, the proposed investment is part of discussions involving Nvidia, OpenAI and SB Energy over financing for the planned Ohio data center campus. The companies are also reportedly discussing around $100 billion in credit support for the project.
Under the structure reportedly being considered, Nvidia could invest around $1.5 billion after the Ohio project agreement is signed, with another $1.5 billion potentially invested through SB Energy’s planned initial public offering. The IPO could reportedly take place as early as September and may seek to raise at least $5 billion.
The Ohio facility is expected to be a major AI infrastructure hub, with SB Energy developing a campus designed to support OpenAI’s growing computing requirements. The project is part of a broader push by technology companies to secure the enormous amounts of power and computing capacity required for advanced artificial intelligence systems.
Nvidia’s potential investment would further deepen its involvement in AI infrastructure beyond supplying GPUs. The chipmaker has increasingly been exploring financing and strategic investments designed to expand the availability of computing capacity as demand for AI workloads continues to surge.
The discussions come shortly after Nvidia reportedly reduced its planned financial guarantee for the Ohio project. Reuters reported that Nvidia’s previously discussed support of up to $250 billion had been scaled back to less than $120 billion for the project’s initial phase.
Neither Nvidia nor SB Energy immediately confirmed the reported $3 billion investment discussions. The proposed deal remains under negotiation and could change before any final agreements are announced.
If completed, the investment would represent another significant step in the rapidly developing partnership between Nvidia, SoftBank and OpenAI, while highlighting the enormous financial commitments now required to build the infrastructure powering the global AI boom.
